The Skidmore field hockey team gave a sports clinic in technique Wednesday afternoon – it just happened to be during a game.

The Thoroughbreds, ranked 13th in the country, hammered Hartwick 8-1 at Wagner Park, and they did it with precision one-touch passing, solid plays and great execution. “We’ve been playing well in practice, and we were able to transfer that to the game,” said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck.

Skidmore started the game strong, with three goals in the opening six minutes. Kelly Blackhurst got things started at just 22 seconds into the game with an assist from Ceilidh MacNeill. Her second goal of the game, and 25th on the season, came at 3:42, beating a defender one-on-one.

Hartwick’s only goal came at the 11:31 mark when Kelsey Kimble set up Hiliary Carlson, who scored her fifth goal of the season.

The second half was more of a defensive battle, but the Thoroughbreds still managed to score two more goals. Sam Scott scored off an assist from Dani DeGregory of Greenwich at the 27:36 mark. And Sofia San Marco scored on a penalty corner.

After the game Hartwick coach Anna Meyer said “Obviously the game didn’t go particularly well for us. But everyone got into the game for some good experience.” Skidmore’s Hellenbeck meanwhile said the Thoroughbreds are on a good streak, “And we want to keep it rolling, and continue to play well.

It was the third straight game that eight players recorded a point for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds outshot Hartwick 29-5 and earned 13 penalty corners while giving up none.

Skidmore closes out its regular season at home on Saturday against Geneseo.
