The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County (LWV) held a forum Thursday night for State Supreme Court candidates. Voters will be electing four justices to the 4th Judicial District of the State Supreme Court this November. Eight people are running for those four spots, and all eight spoke at the forum.
The 4th Judicial District encompasses 11 counties, and is geographically the largest district in the state. It runs from Schenectady County in the south to St. Lawrence, Franklin and Clinton counties to the north.
Each candidate gave a presentation of up to five minutes in length, but they did not take questions from the audience. Those rules have been established by the LWV so that the candidates will not be asked to comment on cases that may eventually come before the Supreme Court.
For those unable to attend the forum, Saratoga Wire has recorded each of the candidate statements. They are presented below in alphabetical order, with links to additional information about each candidate.
Felix J. Catena
John T. Ellis
Joseph M. Sise

The League is sponsoring a number of other candidate nights, and all of them are open to the public. On October 18th candidates from the 43rd District New York Senate race and the 113th district of the New York Assembly will be speaking at Saratoga Springs High School. All of the candidates in those races have said they will attend except for one. Republican Kathy Marchione, running in the 43rd Senate district against Democrat Robin Andrews, has not yet accepted the invitation. The deadline for acceptance was Tuesday.
On October 23rd the League is featuring a Clifton Park forum for the 20th Congressional District, New York Senate District 49 and Assembly District 112.
And on October 25th, the League is sponsoring an event along with Saratoga Wire that is of particular importance to voters in Saratoga Springs. Representatives both for and against the proposed new Charter for the city will come together for discussion.
