One person has died as a result of a drug overdose and more than one hundred arrests were made relating to three days of concerts at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which featured the band Phish, the Saratoga County District Attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

Multiple law enforcement agencies teamed up to conduct a three-day “Operation Impact” detail to “aggressively deal with illegal narcotics,” according to Lt. John Catone of the Saratoga Springs Police Department Investigations Division.

It is unclear how many people were specifically charged. A tally of charges released by the district attorney’s office lists 32 drug-related felony and 28 drug-related misdemeanor charges by State Park Police in addition to 30 non-drug related misdemeanor charges, 95 violations, and single charges of forcible touching and resisting arrest.

City and State Police combined for a total of 29 drug-related arrests, in addition to issuing 50 traffic tickets. Arraignments were conducted inside the Lincoln Bath House – which houses state court offices and the State Park Police – throughout the weekend, and shuttles transported defendants between the makeshift courthouse and county jail, according to the district attorney’s office.

Authorities said LSD, MDMA (ecstasy), Mushrooms, Hash, Ketamine, Bath Salts, Cocaine, Heroin, and Nitrous Oxide were among the drugs encountered. Law enforcement also discovered gummy bears which contained LSD.

No details were released regarding the person who died as a result of a drug overdose other than that during one of the concerts, “an individual was taken to Albany Medical Center due to a drug overdose and died as a result of that drug overdose."

Below is the release from the Saratoga Springs Police Department detailing the weekend's arrests

Operation Impact Detail (Phish Concert)

On July 5th – 7th, 2013, The Saratoga Performing Arts Center hosted three days of concerts featuring the band PHISH. This band has a similar type following as the legendary Grateful Dead had for so many years. With expected sell-outs all three nights (25,000), the Saratoga Springs Police Department Narcotics Unit, Criminal Investigation Unit, and Patrol Officers teamed with members of the New York State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) and road Troopers, conducted a three day “Operation Impact” detail to aggressively deal with illegal narcotics that are often associated with these types of events. During the three day event members of the SSPD and NYSP were partnered together in various types of interdiction type details over an eight hour period each day. The proactive and aggressive teamwork from both agencies yielded the following results:

Vehicle and Traffic Stops: 75
Uniform Traffic Tickets (UTT): 50
Arrest: 26

Various Drugs Encountered: LSD, MDMA (ecstasy), Mushrooms, Hash, Ketamine, Bath Salts, Cocaine, Heroin, Nitrous Oxide

Below is the News Release from District Attorney James Murphy's Office

Phish concert at SPAC results in hundreds of arrests over 3 days involving Ketamine (Special K), LSD laced gummy bears, heroine and ecstasy as well as one death due to drug overdose.

Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III announced today combined totals of arrests from the Saratoga Springs Police Department and the New York State Park Police, and New York State Police all relating to the 3 day Phish concert at SPAC this past weekend.

The Saratoga Springs City Court Judges conducted arraignments at the Lincoln Baths, Office of Court Administration throughout the night and the Office of the District Attorney was available for providing bail recommendations all night long over the weekend.  Shuttles between the "courthouse" and the jail ran all night transporting charged defendants to the Saratoga county Correctional Facility until this morning's appearance in Saratoga Springs City Court when most of the defendant's cases were returnable.  4 assistant district attorneys were assigned to handle the extra volume rather than just one due to the high number of arrests.

During the Phish concert, law enforcement reported that in one case an individual was taken to Albany Medical Center due to a drug overdose and died as a result of that  drug overdose.  In another case law enforcement  discovered gummy bears which contained what field tested to be LSD.

The breakdown by law enforcement is as follows:

New York State Park Police
1        A-II Felony Charge (Drugs Related)
11      B Felony Charges (All Drugs Related)
16      C Felony Charges (All Drugs Related)
4        D Felony Charges (All Drugs Related)
30      A Misdemeanor Charges
28      Drug Related Misdemeanor Charges
1        Forcible Touching
1        Resisting Arrest
95      Violations

Saratoga Springs Police Department
75      Vehicle and Traffic Stops
50      Uniform Traffic Tickets (UTT)
26      Penal Law arrests (Drug related)

Contrary to this published newspaper article, according to the Albany Medical Examiners Office, the one death was due to Natural causes, what they call Cardiac Stenosis (clogged artery) that had gone undetected. It's important for everyone to know this correct information

    • Dale Willman on July 14 2013

Debb, at the time this article was written the County District Attorney told us the death was due to a drug overdose. We have not reached the family, and no official information has been released to say otherwise. We will write a new story if we are able to speak with family members, as well as the coroner's office, which has so far remained pretty silent on the issue.

Do we still need these 3 day marathon concerts at SPAC?
